Sun Flash Accelerator F40 or F80 PCIe Card: The Usable Capacity Of SSD Reduces After Format (Doc ID 1575712.1)

Last updated on APRIL 02, 2018

Applies to:

Flash Accelerator F80 PCIe Card - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
F40 Flash Accelerator Card - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

The usable capacity of each F40 SSD reduces from 100GB to 74GB after the execution of a format (aka Performance Over-Provisioning) with the ddcli utility. In the below example of F40 Flash Accelerator Card, we see the values of disk geometry (disk number 6), shown before and after Performance Over Provisioning.

BEFORE PROVISIONING:

AFTER PROVISIONING:
       4. c0t500051600001B3CCd0 <ATA-3E128-TS2-550B01-TI35 cyl 65533 alt 2 hd 16 sec 186>

          /scsi_vhci/disk@g500051600001b5b0
       6. c0t500051600001BC20d0 <ATA-3E128-TS2-550B01-TI35 cyl 65533 alt 2 hd 16 sec 149> ----------------> SSD capacity after Format/Provisioning reduced from 100GB to 74GB

          /scsi_vhci/disk@g500051600001beac

Similarly, the capacity each F80 SSD reduces from 200GB to 149GB.

Before Over-Provisioning
      10. c0t5002361000148440d0 <ATA-2E256-TU2-510B00-UI5P-186.26GB>
          /scsi_vhci/disk@g5002361000148440

After Over-Provisioning
      10. c0t5002361000148440d0 <ATA-2E256-TU2-510B00-UI5P-149.01GB>
          /scsi_vhci/disk@g5002361000148440

NOTE:
1. The format operation mentioned in this document points to the Flash Card internal operation but not the Solaris Operating System command.
2. Without doing the card level format, the SSDs or volumes from Flash PCI Card are not visible to Operating System under its FORMAT command output.
3. The RAW capacity of each SSD is 100GB for F40 card and 200GB for F80 card.
4. The iostat -En output reflects the correct capacity after the system reboot.
5. The disk capacity under format is calculated by "No. of Cyl x heads x sectors x 512 = Disk Capacity (in bytes)".  Dividing the output value by 1024 into 3 times will give capacity in GB.
