On a NIS master server the SMF service svc:/network/nis/passwd:default may be placed ointo status maintenance when a system boots up.

Symptoms

After booting up a system that is configured as a NIS master server, you may notice the SMF service svc:/network/nis/passwd:default has become placed into status maintenance, and there is no rpc.yppasswdd(1M) daemon process running in the system.

In addition to that, the following messages do get logged into the file /var/svc/log/network-nis-passwd:default.log. Example:
