Symptoms

After setting up a network interface , it cannot be started by running ifconfig up:

# ifconfig interface0:1
interface0:1: flags=1000842<BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 2
       inet 169.XXX.XXX.68 netmask ffffc000 broadcast 169.XXX.XXX.255
# ifconfig interface0:1 up
ifconfig: setifflags: SIOCSLIFFLAGS: interface0:1: Cannot assign requested address
