With VirtualBox 4.3.14 or later, Connecting USB Drive to Host Causes Windows Guest Keyboard to Disconnect

(Doc ID 1946222.1)

Last updated on FEBRUARY 20, 2017

Applies to:

Oracle VM VirtualBox - Version 4.3 to 4.3 [Release 4.0]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

In a VirtualBox 4.3.12 or later setup, the guest Windows Virtual Machine (VM) is running in Full screen or Seamless mode. After attaching an USB memory stick on the host, and the drive showing up in the guest session (via USB passthrough), the guest will disconnect the keyboard so typing no longer works. Only a reboot of the VM solves the problem. Window mode does not show the problem.

NOTE: This also can happen with most of the features of the Host+Home pop-up menu while being in Full screen mode, not only with USB passthrough.
