nfs mount: RPC: Timed Out - But Can "ping" the NFS Server

Symptoms
When NFS client tries to mount a share it fails with error:
# mount -F nfs NFS-server:/opt/xxxx /mnt
nfs mount: NFS-server: RPC: Timed out
nfs mount: retrying: /mnt
^C
Meanwhile these messages are seen on the NFS-server:
... nfssrv: [ID 694464 kern.warning] WARNING: nfsauth upcall failed: RPC: Operation in progress
... nfssrv: [ID 252574 kern.warning] WARNING: nfsauth upcall failed: RPC: Unable to send; errno = 132
... nfssrv: [ID 949115 kern.warning] WARNING: nfsauth: mountd not responding
...
