Last updated on AUGUST 09, 2019

Applies to:

Sun StorageTek 9840D Tape Drive - Version Not Applicable to Not Applicable [Release N/A]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

You may see 6141 or 6145 errors in the dump or event log. These will appear as Unsupported format errors on a mainframe attached drive.

3590 Emulation Sense Data Example of this type of error:

*IOS000I 0351,51,IOE,02,06000,,**,,HSMB
004910D050205451 2502FF30C0006141 C1F6F9F3F6F70290 4101230090081310
UNSUPPORTED FORMAT

In the above example sense byte 7=51 which says this is format 51 type sense data.

For format 51 sense, the unique device Fault Symptom Code (FSC) may be in Sense Bytes 14
and 15. Bytes 16-21 will contain the EBCDIC Volume Serial Number of the cartridge loaded if the
volume serial number can be obtained from the tape or RFID.

The FSC for this example is 6141 and the volser is A69367.

6141 or 6145 errors can appear in the tape drive event logs for Fibre Channel attached drives as well. If they are severe then they may abend jobs.

These are usually transient errors that can occur in shops with busy OKM servers or if the servers are running with down-rev software. (below version 2.5.2)

Typically these errors are retried and the job works fine.
