Purpose

It is common for modern SIP devices to use application layer keepalive mechanisms to determine (or maintain) service availability. This document describes the theory and best practice of such behavior.

Scope

This document defines a series of SIP configuration recommendations to be used when either (a) deploying a new Session Director, or (b) updating an existing configuration made before Best Current Practices were in place.
