In Bind version 9 the nslookup(1M) command is deprecated, and is not fully featured any more, than it was in older versions of BIND. The command dig(1M) is recommended to get used for testing lookups in DNS.

The nslookup(1M) command may fail and display the message "server can't find [hostname].[domainname]

The nslookup command does make use of the resolver option ndots in resolv.conf(4), that it did not use before.
