Goal

When one encounters a message with "Server refused to allocate pty" when ssh(1) into a Solaris machine, one may normally be quick to conclude that this is a pty(pseudo terminal) exhaustion issue. In truth, this can be the result from various issues.

This document attempts to provide general troubleshooting steps to trace and narrow down the underlying issue that caused the "Server refused to allocate pty" failure on Solaris system. This will allow the right support team to be engaged to resolve the actual underlying issue.
