Error "A smart card was detected but is not the one required for the current operation" is reported by sites that use Smart Cards and 3rd party Authentication during Secure Global Desktop login using JNLP method

Symptoms

Secure Global Desktop (SGD) is configured to login to sites utilizing third party authentication with smartcards.  Error messages are received from the smartcard software when attempting to log in and the session is started using the sgd-webstart.jnlp client. The sites are using 90meter smartcard authentication software and return the error:

A smart card was detected but is not the one required for the current operation. The smart card you are using may be missing required driver software or a required certificate. Contact your system administrator to resolve this problem

 

 

 

 

Changes

Java on the client has been updated to any of 1.7.0_121, 1.7.0_131, or 1.7.0_141.   SGD 5.2 Patch Set Update (PSU) 8 and WebServer patch Jul2016/ and JVM patch 1.8.0_121 was installed.
