User Command Prompt Has "I Have No Name" Instead Of Username

Symptoms

On one system user logs in successfully with id, uid, gid etc set based on LDAP entries and the prompt contains their username.
On another system user logs in successfully but id is missing and login prompt is set to "I have no name".
On non working system the id -a does not return username and groups for the user, only UID and GID
