Goal

The PCA internal NM2-36P Sun Datacenter InfiniBand Expansion Switch may require minimum firmware to support newer sub-component hardware (power supply) on the switch.
This document describes one method to upgrade the firmware from version 2.1.x to version 2.2.9-3.

This document can also be used as guidelines for general patching and/or maintenance upgrading from 2.1.8 -> 2.2.7 -> 2.2.13.

Additional detail:
Recent InfiniBand switches use a power supply that requires a newer firmware version. Because some firmware versions may cause the ILOM shell to hang, Oracle PCA requires that you install firmware version 2.2.9-3.

Oracle PCA racks shipped prior to Release 2.3.3 all contain InfiniBand switches with firmware version 2.1.8-1 or older.  Because the firmware has changed from unsigned to signed packages, there is no direct upgrade path to version 2.2.9-3. Therefore, an intermediate upgrade to unsigned version 2.2.7-2 is required.

Newer shipping PCA 2.3.3 racks may already have the 2.2.9-3 firmware already installed on the switches.  In 2.3.4, the PCA ISO will include 2.2.9-3, as well.

NOTE:  See this important MOS Note 2302714.1 prior to upgrading from 2.1.x to prevent the switch from becoming un-bootable.
