Oracle Branded Emulex Dual 16Gb Fibre Channel HBA Logging "Adapter Busy. Unable to allocate exchange" During Heavy I/O (Doc ID 2514287.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 05, 2022

Applies to:

SPARC M7-8 - Version All Versions and later
Solaris Operating System - Version 11.3 and later
Solaris x64/x86 Operating System - Version 11.3 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

During periods of high workloads against LUNs connected through Oracle branded Emulex Dual 16Gb Fibre Channel HBAs, with more than 512 concurrent exchanges in progress on a HBA port, high service times and/or I/O stalls are observed. Further observation of the emlxs driver kernel trace message buffer events indicates packet transport failures due to adapter busy unable to allocate exchange.

Changes

Changes are relevant to Oracle branded Emulex Dual 16Gb Fibre Channel HBAs only.

Oracle branded Emulex Single and Dual 8Gb Fibre Channel HBAs do not support Fibre Channel Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV), therefore this issue is not applicable.

Oracle branded Emulex Dual 32Gb Fibre Channel HBAs already assign all the resources to the physical function (PF) when there is no virtual functions (VF) defined, so no changes are required for this HBA.
