Goal
Replacement of a Fibre Channel HBA is very disruptive, typically requires server downtime, as well as changes to SAN switch zoning and storage array host group configurations. The most common failure component associated with Fibre Channel HBAs are the optical transceivers. Beginning with 8Gbps Fibre Channel HBAs, optical transceivers were transitioned to an Enhanced Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP+) module format.
Replacement of a failed or failing SFP+ Optical Transceiver can be performed while the server is online and takes less than a minute.
