Symptoms
With the command compress(1) or uncompress(1) the message "Permission denied" is reported.
The destination file will be compressed/uncompressed, but the original file still exists, leaving two files after command execution.
# compress -f file1
file1: Permission denied
# ls -l
total 4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6 Sep 14 13:06 file1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10 Sep 14 13:06 file1.Z
