VirtualBox: RDP Connections Freeze With Audio Enabled, Unusable Until Guest Restarted
(Doc ID 2883086.1)
Last updated on JULY 18, 2022
Applies to:
Oracle VM VirtualBox - Version 6.1 and laterInformation in this document applies to any platform.
Symptoms
RDP connections to guests will freeze after some time has elapsed*. Until the Guest is restarted, subsequent RDP connections will display only a black screen. The Guest itself is usable directly on the Host (ie it hasn't locked up).
*This issue occurs MUCH more frequently when 3D acceleration is enabled on the VM, but is still occurring when this option is turned off. With 3D on, sometimes this happens as quickly as 30 minutes; with the option off, the issue occurs on average every 5 days.
Environment info:
Host:
<Host> (Windows 10, Ryzen 9590, 64gb RAM, Geforce RTX 3060 12GB)
Guests:
<Guest 1> (Windows 7, Detachable)
<Guest 2> (Windows 7, Headless, 2 Cores, 4096 MB memory, 256 MB video)
<Guest 3> (Windows 7, Headless, 2 Cores, 4096 MB memory, 256 MB video)
<Guest 4> (Windows 7, Headless, 2 Cores, 4096 MB memory, 256 MB video)
Terminal Computers (Other end of RDP connection):
<Terminal Computer #1> (Windows 10, usually RDP into Guest 1)
<Terminal Computer #2> (Windows 10, usually RDP into Guest 2)
<Terminal Computer #3> (Windows 10, usually RDP into Guest 3)
The issue occurs on all Guests using any combination of terminal computers, including ones not listed here. The host and Guests have the latest versions (6.1.34) of applicable VirtualBox software installed on them.
