Purpose
Sun/Oracle Systems utilize a wide variety of Disk Controllers, primarily SATA/SAS in recent models. Unless you happen to already know, It can often be very difficult to tell what controller your system has. This document will list out which Sun/Oracle X86 systems use what Internal Hardware RAID Controllers, what utilities they use, and where to get software and firmware for them. It will also link to some useful Docs that you can use to help you determine which disk controller or HBA (Host Bus Adapter) you have in your particular system.
Scope
While many of the controllers listed may also be used in Sun/Oracle SPARC systems and Storage Arrays (Several of which are based on Sun/Oracle X86 Systems), this document will deal primarily with Sun/Oracle X86 Systems.
All Sun/Oracle Systems have optional External SCSI/SATA/SAS HBA options for connecting various external storage devices. This document will also deal primarily with the Internal controller's only. Internal Disk components and HBA's are supported by the Platform Hardware Teams (SPARC or X86 Platforms), while External disk arrays and HBA's are supported by the Storage Team.
