Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) Running Tasks Status Stops Progressing During Large Consolidations

Symptoms
HFM Running Tasks screen stops updating during large consolidations. The page will refresh for a bit, but eventually it stops updating and will stay at one status for a long time. The Last Updated Time field also will not change. Then after long period of time the status will refresh.
Setting the refresh option to 5 seconds or clicking the refresh button does not update the status. Often the following errors will also appear in System Messages and HFM ODL logs:
