BI Components Fail To Start With The Start.sh Script And The AdminServer Log File Shows Error: Host Key Verification Failed (Doc ID 2958630.1)

Last updated on DECEMBER 05, 2024

Applies to:

Business Intelligence Server Enterprise Edition - Version 12.2.1.4.0 to 12.2.1.4.0 [Release 12g]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

When starting OBIEE 12c using the <DOMAIN_HOME>/bitools/bin/start.sh script, only the NodeManager starts and the following error is returned:

Node manager started, but cannot connect due to: Error occurred while performing nmConnect : Cannot connect to Node Manager. : sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path validation failed: java.security.cert.CertPathValidatorException: validity check failed

As a temporary solution, the AdminServer was started using the <DOMAIN_HOME>/bin/startWebLogic.sh script, and the communication between the NodeManager and the AdminServer was changed from the default of SSL to Plain (that is, non-SSL). For reference, see: How to Disable SSL on NodeManager in WebLogic (Doc ID 2676957.1)

It was further identified that the demo Identity Certificate had expired, as per the below errors observed in the AdminServer log file:-

<BEA-090171> <Loading the identity certificate and private key stored under the alias DemoIdentity from the kss keystore file kss://system/demoidentity.>
<BEA-000298> <Certificate expires in 0 days: [ ... Validity: [From: <date> To: <date>] ... ]>
<BEA-091020> <Certificate CN=DemoCertFor_bi will expire in 0 days. SOLUTION: Replace the specified certificate with a newer version.>

The demo Identity Certificate was then renewed as per: Identity Certificate Has Expired for DemoIdentity - How to Renew Demo Certificate (Doc ID 2757994.1)

Prior to re-testing the <DOMAIN_HOME>/bitools/bin/start.sh script, the communication between the NodeManager and the AdminServer was changed from Plain back to the default.

But on running the <DOMAIN_HOME>/bitools/bin/start.sh script, only the NodeManager and the AdminServer starts and the following error is observed for each server (bi_server1, obiccs1, obis1 etc.) in the AdminServer log file:-

<Error> <NodeManager> ... <AdminServer> ... <BEA-300048> <Unable to start the server <name>: weblogic.nodemanager.NMException: Host key verification failed.>
