OAS - Cannot add a numeric key to a Custom Knolwedge

Symptoms
From the OAS console:
1. Select Reference Knowledge
2. Add Custom Knowledge
3. Select uploaded xlsx file with numeric key as first column
Note error: "Keys must be short text, and not lists or matching other patterns."
Also, note that the vertical ellipsis to change data type is greyed out.
Changes
Key column (first column) in excel doc must be numeric
