Purpose
Overview
An Advance Shipment Notice (ASN) is a notification of pending deliveries, similar to a packing list. It is usually sent in an electronic format and is a common EDI document. In the EDI X12 system, it is known as the EDI Outbound 856 document. The ASN can be used to list the contents of a shipment of goods as well as additional information relating to the shipment, such as order information, product description, physical characteristics, type of packaging, markings, carrier information, and configuration of goods within the transportation equipment.
The ASN enables the sender to describe the contents and configuration of a shipment in various levels of detail and provides an ordered flexibility to convey information. Accuracy is critical for many industries and errors in the ASN might result in fines or shipment rejection. E1 provides clients with ASN functionality using EDI (Basic ASN), however after 8.10 the ASN functionality in E1 was enhanced to be able to extract more information (mainly automotive and Packaging information) out of the E1 shipping tables, providing more flexibility for users also increasing the number of ASN tables (Extended ASN). It should be noted that the extended ASN can also be used on Non-Transportation orders as well.
