Form Extension and Logic Extension Not Allowing Output to Grid Fields

Customer is trying to call a logic extension (LEX) inside a form extension and it is not allowing the selection of any grid items as return variables although the form control variables are selectable. Is this a limitation that you can only return to form control variables?
