WLS 10.3.x - Unable To Invoke Remote Web Service Due To Error: "Bad_certificate Fatal Error" (Doc ID 1092218.1)

Oracle WebLogic Server - Version 10.3 to 220.127.116.11.0 Information in this document applies to any platform.
When trying to access a remote Webservice over HTTPS from a client deployed on WLS, the following error was thrown:
"FATAL Alert:BAD_CERTIFICATE - A corrupt or unuseable certificate was received."
Weblogic server log shows the following security log message:
<13-Apr-2010 2:04:58 o'clock PM EDT> <Notice> <Security> <BEA-090898> <Ignoring the trusted CA certificate "CN=AIW999". The loading of the trusted certificate list raised a certificate parsing exception PKIX: Unsupported OID in the AlgorithmIdentifier object: 18.104.22.168.2.29.>
The SSL certificate is generated and provided by vendor who hosts the remote Webservice.
