"No such file or directory: FastCGI: read() from pipe failed (0)" When Starting Oracle HTTP Server (Doc ID 1115253.1)

Symptoms

Starting Oracle HTTP Server 10.1.2.0.2

using:

opmnctl startproc ias-component=HTTP_Server


fails with the generic error:

failed to start a managed process after the maximum retry limit
Log:
/u01/oracle/product/OracleAS_1/opmn/logs/HTTP_Server~1.log


Apache error_log file contains the following errors:

[Tue Jun 1 10:48:17 2010] [notice] FastCGI: process manager initialized (pid 4553)
[Tue Jun 1 10:48:18 2010] [alert] (2)No such file or directory: FastCGI: read() from pipe failed (0)
[Tue Jun 1 10:48:18 2010] [alert] (2)No such file or directory: FastCGI: the PM is shutting down, Apache seems to have disappeared - bye
[Tue Jun 1 10:48:21 2010] [warn] pid file /u01/oracle/product/OracleAS_1/Apache/Apache/logs/httpd.pid overwritten -- Unclean shutdown of previous Apache run?
[Tue Jun 1 10:48:21 2010] [notice] FastCGI: process manager initialized (pid 4574)
[Tue Jun 1 10:48:22 2010] [alert] (2)No such file or directory: FastCGI: read() from pipe failed (0)
[Tue Jun 1 10:48:22 2010] [alert] (2)No such file or directory: FastCGI: the PM is shutting down, Apache seems to have disappeared - bye
