Replication Is Not Working: ACK's from the Consumer Missing and The Master Timeouts the Replication Connections

After reinitializing a set of Consumers which were being replicated to over a WAN, the Customer noted that the number of Pending Changes reported by the command:
started to increase.
The following type of errors were seen in the Master error log:
[09/Feb/2011:13:59:58 -0500] - WARNING<10252> - Incremental Protocol - conn=-1 op=-1 msgId=-1 - Failed to end the current replication session [Consumer2:1389]
[09/Feb/2011:13:59:58 -0500] - WARNING<10306> - Incremental Protocol - conn=-1 op=-1 msgId=-1 - Incremental update session aborted : Timeout while waiting for change acknowledgement [Consumer2:1389]
[09/Feb/2011:13:59:58 -0500] - INFORMATION - Repl. Transport - conn=-1 op=-1 msgId=-1 - [S] Unbind an active session Consumer2:1389/<SUFFIX_NAME>?
At the same time, on Consumer error log:
[09/Feb/2011:14:21:25 -0500] - ERROR<8324> - Replication - conn=-1 op=-1 msgId=-1 - [C] Consumer has already detected 5 connections timeout and decides now to ignore them.
The Customer noted a set of Network or Firewall changes had recently been enacted.
