Get_search_results Query Truncates Results To 500

Symptoms
When running a query on a folder containing more than 500 sub-folders, the results never exceed 500. The server log file shows an error of the form:
The attempt to recursively search folder <1234567890> was truncated to the first 500 sub-folders (MaxSearchableSubfolders) of its total <xxxx> sub-folders
...where <1234567890> is the name of the root folder and <xxxx> is the total number of sub-folders
