ORA-29275: partial multibyte character Returned After Upgrading JDBC/OCI to 11g (Doc ID 1377151.1)

Last updated on MAY 25, 2023

Applies to:

JDBC - Version 11.1.0.7 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

When using the 10.2.0.3 JDBC/OCI driver, a Java program selects data from the 10.2.0.3 Database without any issues.

After upgrading the Oracle client from 10.2.0.3 to 11.1.0.7 (JDBC OCI 11.1.0.7), the following error is returned when executing the same query using the same data and same Java application:

ORA-29275: partial multibyte character.

From the 10.2 client, the JDBC/OCI driver works.
From the 11.1.0.7 client, the JDBC/OCI driver produces the error.
Both of the above scenarios go to the same 10.2.0.3 database on the back end.

Even the SQL*Plus from 11.1.0.7 fails:

The 11.1.0.7 JDBC/thin driver works, but it may not be available as a workaround in scenarios where the JDBC/OCI driver is required.
