Tuxedo - SSL Handshaking Fails After Upgrading RSA Public Key From 1024-Bit to 2048-Bit

Symptoms
Tuxedo/SALT application acting as client of an external WebService Provider : SALT outbound request .
The external WebService provider requires to encrypt requests.
Application worked fine until the external WebService provider changed it's certificate.
The certificate was issued by VeriSign to DigiCert and the key-size changed from 1024 to 2048-bit.
Besides the content of the certificate nothing has been changed in the Tuxedo/Salt configuration.
Since the certificate change, outbound requests fail with the following errors :
<time>.<sitename>!GWWS.<pid>.<contextId>.<threadID>: GWWS_CAT:110: ERROR: SSL library error: SSLFatalAlert.
