WCI Search Fails With "Error - Could not contact the Search Service."

When performing a banner search, WCI reports "Error - Could not contact the Search Service.":

When checking the Search Service Manager in WCI Portal Administration, the utility reports "Error - The server has experienced an error. Try again or contact your portal administrator if you continue experiencing problems.":

When running the ptverify.sh, the script reports:

Expected CONNECTSTATUS of OK, got Error: There are no active Search Servers.
Search query server appears to be running with errors!


When checking the system's running process using tasklist in Windows or ps in Unix or Linux, the search service executable, queryd, is running.

In the current search server trace log (for example, \Oracle\Middleware\wci\ptsearchserver\10.3.3\searchnode01\logs\logfile-trace-2012-01-24), the search service has recorded messages like these:
