WLS 2-way SSL Web Service Failed with SSLKeyException Due to BAD_CERTIFICATE (Doc ID 1437762.1)

Symptoms

A 2-way SSL webservice client is deployed on WLS 10.3.3.  (Remote webservice is non-WLS.)  When the client tries to invoke the webservice, it fails with the following fatal error -


The -DUseSunHttpHandler is set on WLS server startup, and JSSE is used.
