Purpose

A Reports Server spawns (starts) engines, that are used to process reports jobs. Sometimes it is unclear why the Reports Server is not using available engines, or starting new engines, when there are a lot of reports jobs waiting in the queue.

This notes explains when and how the Reports Server spawns engines. Next, it explains some cases where it is unclear why engines are not used, or new ones are not started. Each section contains a few references for further reading.
