Last updated on MARCH 15, 2021

Applies to:

Oracle Solaris Studio - Version 12.2 to 12.4 [Release 12]
Oracle Solaris on SPARC (64-bit)
Oracle Solaris on x86-64 (64-bit)

Symptoms

When non-GUI installation of Oracle Solaris Studio 12.2 or higher is used, the
installer emits the following messages:

[2012-03-06 16:57:39.431]: WARNING - Installer failed to determine CPU type. You may continue installation, but it could fail and Oracle Solaris Studio might not function properly.
[2012-03-06 16:57:39.766]: WARNING - Installer failed to determine available memory size. You may continue installation, but it could fail and Oracle Solaris Studio might not function properly.

There then are two scenarios:

  1. Installation is successful
  2. Installation is unsuccessful. In the installation logfile, the following messages can be observed:

    [2012-03-06 16:58:12.300]: Installing native package...
    [2012-03-06 16:58:12.303]: java.lang.NullPointerException

    [2012-03-06 16:58:12.323]: ... also rollbacking Oracle Solaris Studio(ss-base/12.2.0.0.0)

Changes

The Oracle Solaris Studio installer, in releases 12.2 and higher, uses prtconf and prtdiag to identify system hardware.

The installation failure is specific to Oracle Solaris Studio 12.2; it is resolved in Oracle Solaris Studio 12.3.
