OVD 11g Creating Database Adapter Via ODSM Fails With "Invalid Database Connection" (Doc ID 1490199.1)

Symptoms

Oracle Virtual Directory (OVD) 11g, i.e., 11.1.1.6.0.

Unable to create an Oracle Database (DB) OVD Adapter through Oracle Directory Services Manager (ODSM).

Error returned on the pop-up window:

Invalid Database Connection

Using default DB Adapter configuration:
Template - Default
URL Type - Predefined Database
DB Type - Oracle Oracle Thin Drivers

The wls_ods1-diagnostic.log shows:
