How does WebCenter Sites CSDT (Content Server Developer Tools) identify assets? (Doc ID 1523248.1)

Goal

WebCenter Sites CSDT does not use ID numbers to identify assets. Whenever a CSDT-exported asset is imported to an environment, the asset gets a new ID. If multiple users are working on the same asset that was exported via CSDT, how does CSDT know that the asset already exists on the system when doing an import?
