[Java SE] Java SE 7u21 - Unsigned Applet User Experience Changes (Doc ID 1543593.1)

Last updated on APRIL 22, 2024

Applies to:

Java SE JDK and JRE - Version 7 to 7 [Release 7]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Purpose

Java SE 7u21 will introduce changes to Java browser plug-in behavior. Java code executed within the client’s browser will prompt the user.  The type of dialog messages presented depends upon risk factors such as, is the code signed or unsigned, is the code requesting elevated privileges, is the JRE above or below the security baseline, etc. Low risk scenarios present a very minimal dialog and include a checkbox to not display similar dialogs by the same vendor in the future. Higher risk scenarios, such as running unsigned jars, will require more user interaction given the increased risk.

This article specifically details the changes to execution behavior of unsigned applet with the Java plug-in.  In particular, comparing screen shots from different security level settings along with the resulting popup prompt between JavaSE 7u21 and the previous release of JavaSE 7u17.  For more information, please refer to Java Applet & Web Start - Code Signing.
