This note will show you how to use basic spreadsheet functions to analyse the access logs of Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) in order to understand the nature of a performance problem.  The examples below uses Microsoft Excel, but any spreadsheet software program could be used which has similar functionality.

The examples demonstrate a performance issue that appeared within an Oracle Portal/Java Application system but the techniques can be applied to any system that uses OHS in the Web Tier.

 Step 1.   Change the OHS log Format
 Step 2.   Collect data for a period around the time performance issues are experienced
 Step 3.   Import the file into your spreadsheet (For Excel it is important you do it this way)
 Step 4.   Delete or at least hide columns of no interest.
 Step 5.   Trim the Date field
 Step 6.   Expand Column Display

 A)  Find out which URL's are slow
 B)  Find out how frequently the slow URLs are slow
 C)  Find out if only some URL's slow down
