Error "Error -10003 Saving Asset" on one cluster node (Doc ID 1565693.1)

Symptoms

Saving basic assets on one cluster node consistently succeeds, whereas on other cluster nodes it sometimes fails with

Error -10003 saving asset

And in logs the following exception is seen:

17:34:45,190 ERROR [http-8080-1] [fatwire.logging.cs.framework] Error: java.lang.NullPointerException invoking method Save
java.lang.NullPointerException
       at com.openmarket.xcelerate.asset.Asset.SaveNoPubLock(y:3887)
       at com.openmarket.xcelerate.asset.Asset.Save(y:6272)
       at com.openmarket.xcelerate.asset.Asset.Save(y:1313)
       at com.openmarket.xcelerate.commands.AssetDispatcher.Save(y:708)
