Oracle Fusion Middleware

Statement of Direction – Application Server Cluster Ready Services (ASCRS)

Oracle Fusion Middleware provides an active-passive model for all of its components using Oracle Fusion Middleware Cold Failover Cluster (CFC). In a CFC configuration, two or more managed server instances are configured to serve the same application workload but only one is active at any particular time. If the active node fails, the standby node activates and the middle-tier components continue servicing clients from that node. All middle-tier components fail over to the new active node. No middle-tier components run on the failed node after the failover.

Oracle Clusterware (Cluster Ready Services or CRS) is software which ships with the Oracle RDBMS and manages the availability of user applications and Oracle databases in a clustered environment. Oracle Clusterware was initially created to support Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC). Its benefits, however, are not limited to Oracle RAC; it can also be used to manage other applications through add-on modules (or action scripts). For more information about Oracle Clusterware, see the Oracle Clusterware Administration and deployment document in the Oracle Database documentation set. Oracle Clusterware includes a high availability framework that offers protection to any resource with the help of resource-specific add-on modules. With this high availability framework, Oracle Clusterware manages resources through user-provided add-on modules.

Application Server Cluster Ready Services (ASCRS) is an Oracle provided out-of-the-box add-on module to Oracle Clusterware (Cluster Ready Services) for managing active-passive Cold Failover Cluster deployments of Oracle Fusion Middleware . Currently, the ASCRS module is shipped with 11.1.x versions of the Oracle Fusion Middleware product suite.

Actions

This statement of direction is intended to clarify Oracle’s position and the direction on ASCRS.

For new 11.1.x.x active-passive deployments of Oracle Fusion Middleware, customers are advised to not consider using Oracle ASCRS as the failover management solution.

Oracle ASCRS is now in maintenance mode for 11.1.x.x. It is no longer available with Oracle Fusion Middleware 12.1.x and above.
Existing versions of Oracle ASCRS cannot and should not be deployed with Oracle Clusterware 12.1.x,  nor should they be used to manage active-passive deployments of Oracle Fusion Middleware 12.1.x or Oracle Fusion Middleware above 11.1.x.x.
In these scenarios, Oracle Cold failover Cluster deployments can use either customer-developed add-on modules for Oracle Clusterware or migrate to using third party clusterware with supported modules for Oracle Fusion Middleware.
