The Network Adapter could not establish the connection and java.lang.NullPointerException Errors While Making Connections To Oracle RAC With JDBC (Doc ID 1585008.1)

Symptoms

Application running in JBOSS and using JDBC 11.2.0.3 to connect to an 11gR2 RAC database fails intermittently with the following errors:

java.sql.SQLRecoverableException: IO Error: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection
java.lang.NullPointerException

The issue only occurs when using a connection pool.
When the JDBC driver jar file is included in the application war file, the error does not occur.
The errors are not particular to using SCAN; they also occur when the connection URL is pointing to a single node.
