javax.xml.bind.UnmarshalException / org.xml.sax.SAXParseException when requesting a vanity url over RSS (Doc ID 1671505.1)

Symptoms

When requesting a vanity url that does not exist over RSS we get a blank page in RSS and an exception is logged in Sites' sites.log:

javax.xml.bind.UnmarshalException
 - with linked exception:
[org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Premature end of file.]
  at javax.xml.bind.helpers.AbstractUnmarshallerImpl.createUnmarshalException(AbstractUnmarshallerImpl.java:315)
