Consumed Content Continues to Display a Deleted Content Revision

Symptoms
An item contains multiple revisions.
The latest revision, also known as the tip revision of the item is consumed.
The tip revision of that item is subsequently deleted and what had been the previous revision is now the latest revision.
When the item is consumed again, the deleted revision is still presented instead of the now latest revision.
After the latest revision is deleted, when the item is next consumed in a browser, the browser may return an http 304 - Not Modified message.
