Workflow Error When Logging in the Contributor UI (Doc ID 2020150.1)

When users login to the contributor UI the following error message is displayed in a pop up on screen :

Unable to load ContentServer?pagename=fatwire/ui/controller/controller&elementName=UI/Data/DashBoard/Workflow&responseType=Json status:500

This issue occurs only when the user logging in the UI has a workflow assignment .
In the WebCenter Sites log we can see this nullpointer exception :
