"Too many files open" Error with SMTP Connections Increasing and Not Being Released in ODI

Symptoms
Using the Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) and a custom Jython script to establish SMTP connections. The connections are not being released at the end of associated ODI Session, and the ODI Agent / Scenario finally fails with "Too many files open" error.
Restarting the ODI Agent / Scenario releases the held SMTP connections.
There are no issues when using OdiSendMail, and all connections are released.
Also, the same custom code and procedure had no issues when exeucted in previous ODI Release.
Changes
Upgrade from ODI 10g to ODI 12c.
