How to Programmatically Link Two Assets as Translation Assets via REST API ? (Doc ID 2042691.1)

Goal

We have 2 assets in different locales (e.g. one in en_US and the other in fr_FR); they are created separately and NOT using the "Translation" link on the Metadata tab in Sites UI.

How can I link these assets so one of them becomes a Translation asset of the other by REST API ? The sample using JSP tag is now available in <Document 2003297.1>, but I would like to know how to do that with REST API.
