iPlanet Web Server 7.0 Crashes During Initial SSL Connection (Doc ID 2059747.1)

Last updated on APRIL 03, 2017

Applies to:

Oracle iPlanet Web Server - Version 7.0 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

When accessing SSL enabled web site running iPlanet Web Server 7.0, the connection fails with error saying " it can't establish a secure connection.".  Looking at the errors log, it shows the server has crashed upon accessing:

[18/Sep/2015:17:45:47] info ( 6727): CORE3274: successful server startup
[18/Sep/2015:17:45:51] catastrophe ( 6727): CORE3260: Server crash detected (signal SIGSEGV)
[18/Sep/2015:17:45:53] info ( 6782): CORE3274: successful server startup
[18/Sep/2015:17:45:53] catastrophe ( 6782): CORE3260: Server crash detected (signal SIGSEGV)

After enabling coredump on the OS and adding "SSL_DUMP=1; export SSL_DUMP" to the startserv script of the web server, we see a core file is created.  The crashing thread has the following stack:

Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.

So the crash occurs when invoking intel_aes_decrypt_cbc_256 ().
