Symptoms

Attempting to use Extensible Search Filters (RFC 2251) against Oracle Virtual Directory (OVD) and Oracle Internet Directory (OID).

Inconsistent results when running the ldapsearch tool against OID vs. OVD.

For instance, using the OVD/OID $ORACLE_HOME/bin/ldapsearch tool against OVD does return results with an extensible filter. However, running the same search against OID returns 0 results.
