OUD 11g / 12c - Can the Bundle Patch be Applied without Service Interruption?

The goal of this article is to clarify if an OUD bundle patch upgrade can be applied without service interruption
For example, upgrading version 126.96.36.199.1 by applying the bundle patch version 188.8.131.52.3 one instance at a time.
Is this strictly necessary or can each node be stopped, upgraded, and brought back up - one at a time?
In particular, will replication continue to work seamlessly between the OUD nodes if they are on different bundle patch versions?
The instructions in the OUD BP3 README do not cover information about upgrading multiple nodes without service interruption :
