Symptoms
Library OVD (libOVD) with WebCenter Portal connecting to OVD (Oracle Virtual Directory) 11g servers.
LDAP socket timeout when searching for the role of the user in a group.
About 5 minutes after clicking on the "My Documents" link in Webcenter Portal which attempts to contact WebCenter Content (WCC), a 503 error then appears on the screen as well as time outs in the UCM log file:
javax.naming.NamingException: LDAP response read timed out, timeout used:120000ms.; remaining name 'cn=<USER>,ou=Groups,dc=<COMPANY>,dc=com'
The application log shows:

There is another environment with a very similar configuration, including a firewall, that does not have this problem. The working environment firewall is set with same (default) timeout values, and the libovd and OVD configuration is the same with timeouts lower than the firewall.
