Portal Server Status Shows As Unknown State With JVM Deadlock Detected

Information in this document applies to any platform.
In an 11g Oracle WebCenter Portal with one or more managed servers and the manage server shows a status of Unknown State.
There are no errors reported in the user interface or in the log files which seem specific to the change of server state.
