ODI 12c Validates Mapping with SET Component but Fails at Scenario Generation with Fatal Error "Caused by: JNPE" (Doc ID 2316024.1)

Symptoms

In Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) 12c, generating a Scenario of a specific Mapping using the SET component fails even though the Mapping can be validated without errors.  The error message received is as follows:

To reproduce the behavior:

  1. Open ODI Studio > Designer and navigate to the Mapping.
  2. Edit the Mapping, and on the "Logical" tab, observe the (SET component).
         
  3. Click on the green check mark to validate the Mapping. Observe this works without errors.
          
  4. Attempt to generate a Scenario from the Mapping, and observe this fails.
